How do I know if I’m pregnant?

The first sign of pregnancy is typically a missed period, but you may also experience nausea, tiredness, darkening of the nipples, food aversions, mood swings, and tender or swollen breasts. A missed period does not always mean you are pregnant. The only way for you to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. At our clinic, a member of our compassionate staff will provide you with a free pregnancy test and discuss your results with you immediately during your appointment.

What do pregnancy tests do?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone in urine called hCG. A woman’s body starts to produce hCG at conception and the hormone will continue to double every 72 hours in the first few weeks of pregnancy. This rapid increase is why it is important not to take a pregnancy test too early. Taking a test too early could result in a false negative because it is unable to detect the small amounts of hCG in a woman’s urine. For the most accurate results, you should take a pregnancy test two weeks after your missed period. At this point, a test will be over 90 percent accurate.

I’m pregnant, what’s next?

After a positive pregnancy test, your next step is to have an ultrasound. An ultrasound will tell you how far along you are and if a pregnancy is viable. We provide free ultrasounds with a positive pregnancy test at our clinic.

If you think you might be pregnant, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Our staff is here to answer questions and discuss all your options with you. Schedule an appointment for a free and confidential pregnancy test today.
